Charleston dodges first major storm of the year. Treat it as a wake up call…are you prepared? Take a look here for some preparedness advice. ā€œPreppersā€ used to get a bad rap or at least be described as conspiracy theorists. However, recent natural disasters have taught us that we must be prepared to take care of ourselves for a few days. Here is a link to a comprehensive guide to being prepared to protect you and your family during an emergency.

can’t we all just get along?…Local restaurant owners fight back against ShrimpGate. Look, we get it…if you advertise ā€œwe serve locally caught shrimp onlyā€ on your menu and you buy shrimp from over seas, then sure, please stop lying to your customers.

šŸŗ Local Breweries - Who’s Ready For Hoppy Hour?

Friendly beertenders āœ…ā€¦Good Food āœ…ā€¦Live Music āœ…ā€¦Great Vibes āœ…

It was a labor of love to check out some local hops and barley…but somebody had to do it! Here are 5 of our favorites to check out:

  1. Holy City Brewery - North Charleston. We love the food including the wings! Large place with huge outdoor space. Needless to say the beer is outstanding. Check website for live music schedule. Only bummer…no dogs allowed.

  2. Edmund’s Oast - Check out thir Happy Hour Mon-Fri from 4-6. Edmund’s Oast features a new menu (we miss the pizza). Our favorite on tap…Bound By Time IPA.

  3. Common House Ale Works- Park Circle. We love the vibe at Commonhouse…casual and friendly. Add in a splash of Adirondack rockers, great beer, live music and food by Swig & Swine…jackpot!

  4. Rusty Bull Brewing Co. - North Charleston. Rusty Bull offers great food, service and beer. Very limited outdoor space. However, if you are so inclined…wander over next door and throw some axes! No, we are not kidding.

  5. Two Blokes Brewing - Mount Pleasant. Two Blokes is celebrating their 9th Anniversary next weekend July 11th-13th. They promise awesome food trucks, live music and new beer releases.

ā€œYour whole day can’t be great if it doesn’t start that way!ā€

Jim, Founder of Liberty Beans Coffee Company

Jim spilled the beans (see what we did there ) on the green coffee bean industry. Says Jimā€¦ā€we only purchase the best arabica beans that allow us to produce incredible tasting coffee without bitterness. Our coffee is known for its low acid content as wellā€.

Diane also heads up Liberty Beans fundraising programs. ā€œWe work with schools, teams, organizations and charities to help them reach and exceed their fundraising goals. For schools and teams, we realized that whatever kids are selling…adults are buying. We work with them to create a custom label for the coffee bags to highlight their organization. It has been tremendously successful!ā€

šŸ“ Local Bites - Burger Wars!

šŸ” Let’s talk juicy, dripping, melted cheese and perfectly topped BURGERS! Whether it be a dive bar or upscale hot spot…a good judge of restaurant character is their burger.

Here’s a few to check out this week:

Tattooed Moose - Park Circle and John’s Island. Dive bar with famous food. Tattooed Moose offers a classic example of two thin patties, onions, lettuce, tomato, American cheese, and special sauce between toasted kaiser rolls. Don’t leave without ordering a side of duck fat fries.

Heavy’s Barburger - Charleston and Daniel Island. The Barburger is an all-American classic of smashed double Patties, American cheese, sliced tomato, red onion, lettuce, pickles, and Heavy’s sauce.

The Archer - Neighborhood spot - the Archer has one of the messiest burgers around, but it’s good fun. The patty is covered in Parmesan cream AND fancy sauce, so you might need extra napkins, but there’s also a mountain of fries to sop up the extra goodness. The burger is only $10 after 10 p.m.!

Big Gun Burger Shop & Bar - Charleston. Dive bar/punk rock venue Big Gun specializes in burgers and excels at the classic with American cheese, onion, pickles, and special sauce. It’s an easy stop to squeeze in on the way to or from the bars on King Street. Though if you want to stay put at Big Gun, check out the extensive collection of craft beers and whiskeys.

Poe’s Tavern - Sullivan’s Island. Go for the Burgers and shoestring fries. Stay for the excellent crafted cocktails and cold brews. We are partial to their Orange Crush!
