🌊 More Than You Wanted To Know About A King Tide

A King Tide is a term used for the highest tides of the year caused by the alignment of the Earth, moon and sun. These exceptionally high tides, which also have the lowest low tides, happen during full or new moons, especially when the moon is at its closest point to Earth (perigee) and during specific times of the year, often in winter and summer. When a king tide coincides with storms, it can lead to flooding in coastal areas.  Hit The Beach, Duh - Although the ocean temps are getting close to the “not refreshing” zone, there is almost always a nice breeze on the coastline. Our favorite activity is to sit down by the water with a great book.

What Causes A King Tide

  • Gravitational pull:

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on Earth's oceans. Gator Bites

  • Alignment:

When the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned, their combined gravitational pull creates a larger tidal range. This happens during the new moon and full moon phases. Best Shrimp & Grits…Who Ya Got?

  • Yearly and monthly cycles:

King tides occur when these monthly (spring tides) and yearly patterns align. The moon's orbit brings it closest to Earth at perigee, resulting in an even greater tidal range.

  • Spillage:

It is widely accepted that if everyone downtown on a Friday night spills their drink at the same time we have a Drunk Tide…similar to a King Tide but with floating lime garnish. 😂
